Angel’s Envy

LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY

Experience bourbon with a finishing touch

Angel’s Envy has a distinctive place in Louisville’s whiskey story: it honors classic bourbon craft while exploring what happens when whiskey receives a second maturation in finishing barrels. Its signature bourbon is finished in port wine barrels, adding a recognizable layer to the spirit’s character. At the downtown distillery, visitors can learn how the finishing process works, follow production from grain to glass, and discover how the brand approaches bourbon and rye. The experience suits first-time visitors as well as enthusiasts interested in barrel finishing, blending, and the creative choices that shape a modern whiskey.

The history behind the distillery

Angel’s Envy was founded in Louisville by Lincoln Henderson, a respected distiller who wanted to explore a new direction for bourbon without abandoning its traditions. Henderson developed the brand around secondary finishing: whiskey first matures in charred American oak and then rests in a different cask, including the port wine barrels that became the signature. The name grew from a tasting-room joke about the portion of whiskey lost to evaporation, traditionally called the angel’s share. In 2016, Angel’s Envy opened a full-production distillery on Louisville’s Whiskey Row, returning whiskey production to the historic district after Prohibition. The project joined a classic bourbon foundation to an experimental finishing technique and an urban visitor experience.

What visitors can take away

Barrel finishing is the key to understanding what makes Angel’s Envy distinctive. Rather than ending the whiskey’s journey after its first maturation, the distillery explores how a second cask can contribute additional aromas and flavors. The port wine finish became the signature example, while the brand continues to investigate other cask influences. Visitors can learn how the finishing step fits into the larger production process and why the choice of cask matters. The Whiskey Row location adds a broader Louisville context: a modern production facility now occupies a historic district that once served as a center of the city’s whiskey business. The combination of a contemporary technique and a historic urban setting gives Angel’s Envy a story that is easy to remember and share.
